ElastiCache Extended Support Versions

Opportunity Name

ElastiCache Extended Support Versions (Redis OSS v4/v5/v6)

AWS Resource Type (AWS service name)

Amazon ElastiCache (Redis OSS / Valkey)

Opportunity Description

AWS has introduced Extended Support for legacy ElastiCache for Redis OSS major versions v4, v5, and v6. After a major version’s end of standard support, ElastiCache caches that are still running that version are automatically enrolled in Extended Support and begin incurring additional charges.

This CloudFix Finder identifies ElastiCache clusters (including replication groups) running the affected Redis OSS versions and provides:

  • Timeline warnings (including 365-day advance notice)

  • Extended Support cost impact vs upgrading

  • Recommended upgrade path (prefer Valkey 7.2, or Redis OSS 7.x)

Criteria for identifying the opportunity

CloudFix flags an opportunity when all of the following are true:

In-scope resources

  • Amazon ElastiCache caches / replication groups running Redis OSS v4, v5, or v6.

  • Memcached is excluded (Extended Support here applies to Redis OSS engines only).

Version specifics (AWS Extended Support eligibility)

  • Redis OSS v4: Extended Support applies to the latest patch 4.0.10 (AWS auto-upgrades to this patch before Extended Support enrollment if required).

  • Redis OSS v5: Extended Support applies to the latest patch 5.0.6 (AWS auto-upgrades to this patch before Extended Support enrollment if required).

  • Redis OSS v6: Applies to all v6.x versions (standard support ends later).

Recommendation stability

  • The affected cluster should be observed as stable for 30 days prior to issuing the recommendation (to reduce churn / transient findings).

Time-based alerts

  • Generate warnings starting 365 days before the relevant “End of Standard Support” date (and continue through Extended Support).

Potential Savings (if known)

Savings depend on cluster size and node types, but generally:

  • Avoiding Extended Support premiums can reduce costs substantially.

  • Upgrading to Valkey may provide an additional ~20% lower node-based pricing versus Redis OSS (engine pricing).

What happens when the Fixer is Executed?

This opportunity has no Fixer (Finder-only). CloudFix does not perform the engine upgrade or migration automatically.

Is it possible to roll back once CloudFix implements the Fixer?

Not applicable — CloudFix does not apply changes automatically for this opportunity. Any rollback would depend on the customer’s own upgrade/migration approach.

Can CloudFix implement the fix automatically once I accept the recommendation?

No — this is a manual fix in AWS (Finder-only).

Does the fix require downtime?

CloudFix does not execute changes. For customer-led upgrades:

  • Engine upgrades can terminate existing client connections during the upgrade process (plan maintenance/testing accordingly).

Support Timeline (used in the recommendation as of Jan 2026)

AWS timeline for Redis OSS major versions in ElastiCache:

  • Redis OSS v4: End of Standard Support 1/31/2026 → Extended Support begins 2/1/2026 → Extended Support ends 1/31/2029

  • Redis OSS v5: End of Standard Support 1/31/2026 → Extended Support begins 2/1/2026 → Extended Support ends 1/31/2029

  • Redis OSS v6: End of Standard Support 1/31/2027 → Extended Support begins 2/1/2027 → Extended Support ends 1/31/2030

Extended Support Pricing Model (used in the recommendation)

For provisioned ElastiCache for Redis OSS instances, AWS prices Extended Support as:

  • Year 1 and Year 2: 80% premium on top of standard On-Demand pricing

  • Year 3: 160% premium on top of standard On-Demand pricing

CloudFix estimates impact by applying the premium to the cluster’s current On-Demand equivalent spend, aggregated across all nodes in the cluster/replication group.

Recommended Upgrade Paths (shown in the recommendation)

  • Primary: Upgrade to ElastiCache for Valkey 7.2 (often lower cost vs Redis OSS and avoids Extended Support).

  • Alternative: Upgrade to Redis OSS 7.x (direct engine-version upgrade path).
