Opportunity Description:
Over time a fleet of Dedicated Hosts can end up under-packed — instances spread thinly across more hosts than they actually need. This opportunity analyzes an account and region's entire Dedicated Host fleet and, where instances could be repacked onto fewer hosts, proposes a consolidation plan: which hosts to release, which to keep, and the specific instance moves required to get there.
Criteria for identifying the opportunity:
- CloudFix looks at every allocated Dedicated Host in the account/region together, not host by host, and runs a consolidation solver over the whole fleet.
- The solver only proposes releasing a host if no instance was launched onto it at any point across the lookback window (7, 30, or 60 days — default 30) — a recently active host is treated as still needed, even if it looks under-packed today.
- The plan is capped by a moves budget: CloudFix will not recommend a plan that requires more instance moves than the released host's cost justifies (by default, up to 8 moves per host released).
- Host affinity, instance size, and placement constraints are accounted for when computing which instances can actually be repacked together.
Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):
- 100% of the host-hour cost of every host the plan releases — savings scale with how under-packed your fleet is.
Can CloudFix implement the fix automatically once I accept the recommendation?
No. This opportunity is advisory only — CloudFix does not move any instances. Executing the plan means, for each relocated instance, either a stop/start cycle onto the target host or a live migration, depending on your instance type and configuration. Before acting on any move, verify host affinity settings and any per-host licensing terms (for example per-socket Windows Server or SQL Server BYOL).
Other considerations:
- This is a fleet-level analysis, so the recommendation is for the account and region as a whole, not for an individual host.
- CloudFix does not read or store your Dedicated Host license configuration — confirm licensing compatibility on the target host yourself before moving an instance.
- This finder is a companion to EC2 Release Unused Dedicated Hosts, which handles hosts that are already completely empty. Consolidate handles the case where hosts are partially used but could be packed tighter.
