Opportunity Name:
Delete Old EBS Volume Snapshots
AWS Resource Type:
AWS EBS (Elastic Block Store)
Opportunity Description:
This opportunity identifies and deletes old EBS volume snapshots that are no longer needed, reducing storage costs and simplifying snapshot management. By removing these snapshots, you can achieve significant cost savings, especially in accounts with many old, unused snapshots.
Criteria for identifying the opportunity:
- Only deletes snapshots older than a year if they are not the last snapshot
- The last snapshot kept indefinitely
What happens when the Fixer is executed?
The identified old snapshots are deleted after ensuring they are not associated with any critical resources or services, such as AMIs or being shared with other accounts. Snapshot deletion is permanent and cannot be rolled back; the automation reports which snapshot IDs were successfully deleted and which failed in its execution output.
Can CloudFix apply the fix automatically once I accept the recommendation?
Yes
Does this fix require downtime?
No
Other considerations:
- Ensure that the snapshots are not required for compliance or other operational reasons before deletion.
- Review snapshot dependencies, such as AMIs or volume restoration processes, to avoid accidental data loss.
- Consider the impact on disaster recovery strategies and ensure that recent and relevant snapshots are retained according to the organization's data retention policy.
