Opportunity Description:

Save costs and/or improve performance by upgrading older r3, r4, and r5 RDS instances to modern r6g instances.

Criteria for identifying the opportunity:

  • Instance type is one of r3, r4, or r5, and was active and incurring costs in the last 31 days.
  • Annual cost, extrapolated from the last 31 days of usage, exceeds the annual public cost threshold (default $100).
  • AWS indicates that the r6g target type is compatible with the instance (based on properties including DB engine and engine version).
  • Instances covered by a Reserved Instance, or instances that are not in the "available" state, are excluded.

Can CloudFix apply an automatic fix?

Yes

What happens when the Fixer is executed?

The RDS instance is upgraded to the specified r6g instance type, aiming for a 10% cost saving.

  • CloudFix schedules the modification of the instance type for the next maintenance window.
  • CloudFix then waits until the change occurs and verifies that the instance restarted successfully and can be reached over the network.
  • If the instance fails to start or is not reachable, CloudFix automatically rolls it back to the original instance type. If the instance still does not start successfully after that, CloudFix notifies the customer that a manual rollback is required.

Does this fix require downtime?

Yes. Changing the instance type requires downtime, typically of a few minutes, which is why the change is applied in a maintenance window.

Is it possible to rollback once CloudFix implements the fixer?

Yes. CloudFix automatically rolls back the change if the instance does not become available. You can also perform the rollback manually by executing the SSM document "Cloudfix-Runbook-RdsInstanceUpgrade-Rollback-prod" to restore the original instance type.

Parameters:

  • InstanceId: the RDS instance ID.
  • PreviousInstanceType: the original instance type, such as "db.r4.large".

Other considerations:

  • Performance impact: Upgrading to r6g instances can improve performance due to better hardware efficiency.
  • Data loss considerations: There should be no data loss during the instance type upgrade, but it's always recommended to have recent backups.
  • Security concerns: No inherent security risks with upgrading instance types, but review any associated security groups and rules as part of the migration process.
