DynamoDB Infrequent Access

Opportunity Name:

DynamoDB Infrequent Access

AWS Resource Type:

DynamoDB Table

Opportunity Description:

Amazon DynamoDB Standard Infrequent Access table class (DynamoDB Standard-IA) reduces storage costs by 60% and increases access costs by 25% compared to the Standard storage class. This provides an opportunity for savings with tables that store infrequently accessed data.

Criteria for identifying the opportunity:

To determine which DynamoDB tables can benefit from this opportunity, CloudFix considers the last 30 days and calculates, for each table, the ratio between access costs and storage costs. This FF can switch the table storage class in both directions.

It considers a DynamoDB table if it meets the following main criteria:

  •  A Standard class table has a ratio of access costs to storage costs of less than 2.4 during the last 30 days, making it cost-effective to change to Standard-IA
  •  A Standard-IA class table has a ratio of access costs to storage costs of more than 7.5 during the last 30 days, making it cost-effective to change to Standard.
  •  Regional capacity reservations only apply to the Standard class, so ensure no unused reservation will result from a change in table class.
  •  Global tables and both On-Demand and Provisioned capacity are all considered.

Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):

This will vary drastically based on table storage and access costs, the maximum potential cost savings per table basis is 60%.

What happens when the Fixer is executed?

The fixer changes the table class and verifies that it was changed successfully.

Is it possible to rollback once CloudFix implements the fixer?

Yes, the customer can change the table class back to the original value.

Can CloudFix implement the fix automatically once I accept the recommendation?

Yes

Does this fix require downtime?

No
