Opportunity Name:
RDS Optimize EOL Version
AWS Resource Type:
RDS and Aurora Database Instances
Opportunity Description:
AWS RDS and Aurora database instances running on older, end-of-life (EOL) versions of MySQL and PostgreSQL can incur significant costs due to AWS's Extended Support fees. This finder identifies such instances, providing visibility into potential cost-saving upgrade opportunities before the onset of these fees.
Please see this important notification by Amazon: Extended Support for MySQL and PostgreSQL databases
Criteria for identifying the opportunity:
- Scan customer AWS accounts for RDS and Aurora database instances on versions reaching AWS end-of-life support.
- Identify instances eligible for Extended Support fees after AWS-defined EOL dates.
- Annual cost, extrapolated from the last 31 days of usage, exceeds the annual public cost threshold (default $100).
- Instances must have been stable (existing) for at least 31 days.
Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):
- Savings are estimated as the difference in costs by avoiding RDS Extended Support fees for the coming year.
- The savings increase as the date approaches the start of Extended Support.
Can CloudFix apply an automatic fix?
No
Other considerations:
- Performance impact: Upgrading database versions should be carefully planned to avoid potential performance regressions or incompatibilities.
- Data loss considerations: Ensure backups and snapshots are taken before attempting any version upgrades to prevent data loss.
- Security concerns: Review the security implications of new database versions to ensure they meet your organization's compliance and security standards.
