Opportunity Description:

This opportunity targets the optimization of RDS volumes by changing storage types with provisioned IOPS (IO1/IO2) to General Purpose SSD (GP2/GP3). This change aims to achieve significant cost savings by leveraging the cost efficiency of GP2/GP3 storage types compared to the more expensive provisioned IOPS options.


Criteria for identifying the opportunity:

  • Target RDS volumes are currently using IO1/IO2 storage types with provisioned IOPS.
  • Annual cost, extrapolated from the last 31 days of usage, exceeds the annual public cost threshold (default $100).
  • Based on CloudWatch metrics, calculate the required IOPS and Throughput usage to ensure performance is not compromised.
  • Exclude volumes with IOPS requirements exceeding the capabilities of GP2/GP3.
  • Exclude Multi-AZ clusters not supporting GP3, requiring a change in the deployment model for conversion.


Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):

  • Expect savings up to 30%-40% on RDS storage costs by transitioning to GP2/GP3.
  • GP2/GP3 is 8% less expensive in storage, and GP3 is 20% less expensive in IOPS than IO1/IO2.
  • Ensure the cost reduction recommendation surpasses 15% of the Storage costs.

Other considerations:

  • Performance impact: Transitioning to GP2/GP3 should not impact performance negatively. CloudWatch metrics are used to calculate the required IOPS and Throughput, ensuring the performance needs are met.
  • Data loss considerations: There is no data loss expected during the transition from IO1/IO2 to GP2/GP3. However, it's crucial to ensure backups and snapshots are up-to-date before making any changes.
  • Security concerns: Changing storage types does not directly impact security settings. However, it's essential to review and ensure that all RDS instances maintain their security configurations post-migration.
