Opportunity Name:
EMR Consolidate AZ Instances
AWS Resource Type:
Elastic MapReduce (EMR)
Opportunity Description:
CloudFix identifies opportunities to optimize Amazon EMR clusters by consolidating instances into a single Availability Zone (AZ). This optimization aims to reduce inter-AZ data transfer costs associated with EMR clusters that are deployed across multiple AZs. By analyzing the EMR cluster's configuration and identifying clusters with subnets across different AZs, CloudFix can recommend consolidating these instances into a single AZ to achieve cost savings.
Criteria for identifying the opportunity:
- EMR clusters with configurations that include subnets from different AZs are identified.
- Annual cost, extrapolated from the last 31 days of usage, exceeds the annual public cost threshold (default $100).
- Clusters must not be marked with the 'DoNotFix' tag.
Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):
- The estimated savings are calculated based on the annualized inter-AZ costs for the EMR cluster VPC.
- Actual savings will depend on the specific configurations and usage patterns of the identified EMR clusters.
Can CloudFix apply an automatic fix?
No
Other considerations:
- Data Loss: There is no direct risk of data loss from consolidating EMR instances into a single AZ. However, it's crucial to ensure that the chosen AZ has the capacity and resources to support the consolidated workload.
- Performance Impact: Consolidating instances into a single AZ may affect the latency and throughput of the EMR cluster, depending on the specific workload and data sources.
- Security Concerns: Ensure that security groups and network ACLs are appropriately configured to maintain the security posture of the EMR cluster after consolidation.
- Availability: Deploying all instances in a single AZ might affect the availability of the EMR cluster in case of AZ-specific disruptions. Consider the trade-off between cost savings and availability requirements.
