EMR Optimize Instances

Opportunity Name:

EMR Optimize Instances

AWS Resource Type:

Elastic MapReduce (EMR)

Opportunity Description:

This opportunity identifies Elastic MapReduce (EMR) instances that can be optimized for cost, based on AWS Compute Optimizer recommendations, without compromising on performance. By analyzing usage patterns and current instance configurations, CloudFix can recommend more cost-effective instance types that match or exceed the performance of the current setup.

Criteria for identifying the opportunity:

  • EMR clusters utilizing EC2 instances are analyzed.
  • Instances are grouped by account ID, region, resource ID, instance type, tenancy, operation, and EMR job flow ID.
  • Annual cost, extrapolated from the last 31 days of usage, exceeds the annual public cost threshold (default $100).
  • Instances marked with the 'DoNotFixIt' tag are excluded.

Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):

  • Savings are calculated based on the difference between the current instance costs and the recommended instance costs, with a minimum savings threshold of 2% of the annual cost to qualify.

Can CloudFix apply an automatic fix?

No

Other considerations:

  • Performance impact: The recommended instances are selected to match or exceed the performance of the current instances, minimizing the risk of performance degradation.
  • Data loss considerations: There is no direct risk of data loss from optimizing instances. However, it's crucial to ensure that any instance-specific configurations or data are preserved or appropriately migrated during the change.
  • Security concerns: Ensure that the recommended instances meet your security and compliance requirements. Considerations include network configurations, security group settings, and IAM roles.
