EMR Reserve Instances

Opportunity Name:

EMR Reserve Instances

AWS Resource Type:

EMR EC2 Instances

Opportunity Description:

CloudFix identifies opportunities to reduce AWS Elastic MapReduce (EMR) costs by recommending the purchase of reserved instances for EMR clusters. This recommendation targets the minimum number of required instances within the cluster, specifically focusing on Master and Core nodes, to ensure cost efficiency without compromising the cluster's operational needs.

Criteria for identifying the opportunity:

  • Instances must be part of an EMR cluster, identified as Master or Core nodes.
  • Instances not already covered by a reservation are eligible.
  • Annual cost, extrapolated from the last 31 days of usage, exceeds the annual public cost threshold (default $100).
  • Estimated savings from purchasing reserved instances must be greater than 2% of the annual cost.

Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):

  • Savings are calculated based on the difference between the annual cost of on-demand instances and the cost of reserved instances for either 1 or 3 years, with no upfront payment.
  • Actual savings will depend on the specific configurations of the EMR clusters and the number of instances that meet the criteria for reservation.

Can CloudFix implement the fix automatically once I accept the recommendation?

Other considerations:

  • Performance impact: There is no direct performance impact from purchasing reserved instances. However, ensuring that the reserved instances match the required capacity and usage patterns of the EMR clusters is crucial.
  • Data loss considerations: There is no risk of data loss associated with this recommendation as it pertains to billing and cost optimization rather than operational changes to the EMR clusters.
  • Security concerns: No direct security concerns. However, it's important to maintain compliance with any organizational policies regarding AWS resource procurement and management.
