CloudWatch Log Retention Optimization

Opportunity Name:

CloudWatch Log Retention Optimization

AWS Resource Type:

AWS CloudWatch Logs

Opportunity Description:

CloudFix identifies opportunities to optimize CloudWatch log group retention settings to reduce storage costs without compromising compliance or operational needs. By analyzing log storage trends and usage, CloudFix recommends adjusting retention policies to more cost-effective durations.

Criteria for identifying the opportunity:

  • CloudWatch Log groups with @TimedStorage' exceeding the annual public cost threshold (default $100)

Can CloudFix apply an automatic fix?

Yes

What happens when the Fixer is executed?

Automatically apply optimized retention policies of 30, 60, 90, or 365 days, based on usage patterns and compliance requirements. This action is aimed at reducing storage costs while ensuring that log data is retained as per operational and compliance needs.

Is it possible to rollback once CloudFix implements the fixer?

Yes, the retention policy can be manually adjusted back to its original setting if needed. However, it's important to note that logs older than the newly set retention period may have been deleted and cannot be recovered.

Can CloudFix implement the fix automatically once I accept the recommendation?

Yes, upon acceptance of the recommendation, CloudFix can automatically adjust the CloudWatch log group's retention policy to the optimized setting.

Does this fix require downtime?

No, adjusting the retention policy of a CloudWatch log group does not impact the availability of the logs or the logging service.

Other considerations:

  • Data loss considerations: Ensure that the new retention policy aligns with your data retention requirements. Logs older than the retention period will be permanently deleted.
  • Compliance and audit requirements: Verify that the adjusted retention period complies with any regulatory or audit requirements your organization may need to adhere to.
  • Cost implications: While reducing the retention period can lower costs, it's important to balance cost savings with the operational and compliance needs for log data.
