Opportunity Name:
OpenSearch End of Life Extended Support Analysis
AWS Resource Type:
Amazon OpenSearch (formerly Amazon Elasticsearch)
Opportunity Description:
AWS is ending Standard Support for multiple legacy Elasticsearch and OpenSearch versions from November 7, 2025. Customers running affected versions will need to either upgrade to a supported version or be opted into Extended Support at an additional cost.
CloudFix helps customers identify impacted clusters, estimate Extended Support costs, and provide upgrade recommendations to avoid unexpected cost increases.
Key Benefits:
- Avoid unexpected costs by evaluating Extended Support fees.
- Identify outdated clusters before Standard Support ends.
- Plan for migration or Extended Support based on cost analysis.
Criteria for Identifying the Opportunity:
CloudFix scans for Amazon OpenSearch and Elasticsearch clusters running the following soon-to-be unsupported versions:
Service | Unsupported Versions |
---|---|
Elasticsearch | Up to 6.7, 7.1 - 7.8 |
OpenSearch | 1.0 - 1.2, 2.3 - 2.9 |
- Support End Date: Standard Support ends November 7, 2025. See this article for the full list of dates
-
Extended Support Cost: AWS charges an additional fee per instance hour (NIH) (from $0.0065/NIH in
us-east-1
).
Potential Cost Impact:
CloudFix estimates the total added cost of Extended Support based on instance size and instance hours (NIH calculation):
Extended Support Cost Formula:
Normalization Factor | NIH Cost Per Hour | Monthly Extended Support Cost | Annual Extended Support Cost | |
---|---|---|---|---|
r5.large |
4 | $0.0065 | $18.98 | $227.76 |
r5.xlarge |
8 | $0.0065 | $37.96 | $455.52 |
r5.2xlarge |
16 | $0.0065 | $75.92 | $911.04 |
r5.4xlarge |
32 | $0.0065 | $151.84 | $1,822.08 |
r5.8xlarge |
64 | $0.0065 | $303.68 | $3,644.16 |
Recommendation Report
CloudFix generates a detailed report for each affected cluster, including:
-
Cluster Information:
- Cluster ID
- Engine Version
- Region
- Instance Count & Types
-
Support Timeline:
- Standard Support End Date
- Extended Support Start & End Period
- Recommended Upgrade Deadline
-
Cost Analysis:
- Current Monthly Cost
- Projected Extended Support Cost
What Happens When the Recommendation is Accepted?
CloudFix does not automatically upgrade clusters. Instead, it provides a recommendation report, allowing customers to evaluate the cost vs. migration feasibility before taking action.
Is It Possible to Roll Back Once an Upgrade Is Performed?
No. OpenSearch and Elasticsearch version upgrades are not reversible. AWS does not support downgrading clusters once they have been upgraded.
Can CloudFix Implement the Fix Automatically Once I Accept the Recommendation?
No. Customers must manually:
- Migrate clusters to a newer version (if available).
- Opt into Extended Support via the AWS Console.
Does This Fix Require Downtime?
Some upgrade paths may require some downtime. Please refer to the Opensearch Upgrade guide.
