EC2 Instance Modernization

Opportunity Name:

EC2 Instance Modernization

AWS Resource Type:

Amazon EC2

Opportunity Description:

AWS frequently introduces newer-generation EC2 instances that offer better performance and cost savings compared to older models. Many CloudFix customers are running outdated EC2 instance types that could be migrated to newer, more efficient alternatives without requiring any architectural changes.

CloudFix identifies eligible EC2 instances that can be upgraded to a newer generation with lower costs and improved performance.

Key Benefits:

  • Reduce EC2 costs by migrating to the latest generation instances.
  • Gain performance improvements without increasing spending.
  • Leverage enhanced networking, compute, and efficiency features.

Criteria for Identifying the Opportunity:

CloudFix scans for EC2 instances running outdated instance types and suggests modernized replacements:

Legacy Instance Family Recommended Upgrade
t2 t3a
c3, c4, c5, c5a c6a
m1, m3, m4, m5 m6a
r3, r4 r5a

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Current Instance Type: The instance must be one of the legacy instance families listed above.
  • Instance Running for at Least 30 Days: The instance must be active and not newly created.
  • Availability of Newer Generation: CloudFix verifies that the recommended newer instance type is available in the region.
  • Annualized EC2 Cost ≥ $100: Only instances with a significant annualized cost are considered.

Potential Savings:

Migrating to a newer-generation instance typically results in 10-20% cost savings, depending on the region and instance type.

Cost Calculation Formula:

Current Cost = Current Instance Hourly Rate * 730 (monthly hours)
New Cost = New Generation Hourly Rate * 730
Monthly Savings = Current Cost - New Cost
Annual Savings = Monthly Savings * 12

For example, migrating an m4.large (legacy) instance to an m6a.large (modern) in us-east-1:

Instance Type Hourly Rate Monthly Cost Annual Cost Savings (%)
m4.large $0.10 $73.00 $876.00
m6a.large $0.085 $62.05 $744.60 15%

Annual Savings: $131.40 per instance

What Happens When the Recommendation is Accepted?

CloudFix does not automatically change the instance type. Instead, it provides a recommendation, allowing customers to schedule a migration at their convenience.

Is It Possible to Roll Back After Migration?

Yes. AWS allows users to switch back to their previous instance type if needed. However, newer-generation instances generally provide better performance and lower costs, so rollbacks are rare.

Can CloudFix Implement the Fix Automatically Once I Accept the Recommendation?

No. Customers must manually:

  • Stop the instance.
  • Modify the instance type.
  • Restart the instance.

Does This Fix Require Downtime?

Yes, a brief downtime is required since AWS requires instances to be stopped before changing the instance type.
