Retype EBS Volumes in Auto Scaling Groups

Opportunity Name:

Auto Scaling Group (ASG) EBS Volume Retyping

AWS Resource Type:

Auto Scaling Groups & EBS Volumes

Opportunity Description:

CloudFix's gp2 to gp3 fixer identifies eligible gp2 volumes that are not short lived and retypes those to gp3 to achieve 20% savings on EBS volumes. However, you may have Auto Scaling Groups (ASG) that use a predefined Launch Template to launch instances with gp2 volumes. In these cases (1) it's not enough to retype EBS volumes because ASGs may create new instances with gp2 volumes again and (2) ASG launched volumes tend to be short lived and as a result may not be picked up by CloudFix for gp3 retyping. This fixer solves those problems by modifying Launch Templates / Launch Configurations (and corresponding ASGs) to use gp3 EBS volumes.

Finder Criteria:

CloudFix looks at all the ASGs in your environment for evaluation and then the BDMs that define the EBS volume type which would need to be changed. The BDMs would be present in the Launch Templates, Configurations, or in the AMI that is referenced in the Templates/Configurations. CloudFix Finder also takes care of the fact that if mixed instance policy or template overrides is used, then there can be multiple Launch Templates used in one ASG.

Fixer Execution:

After the correct opportunities are identified, the Fixer creates a new Launch Template or Launch Configuration with the correct BDMs, updates the ASG to use this new version of the Launch Template/Configuration, and changes the volume type directly on the volume.

Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):

Gp3 volumes are 20% cheaper than gp2 with no loss of performance.

Can CloudFix implement the fix automatically once I accept the recommendation?

Yes. Once you approve the Fixer Template, CloudFix can automatically execute this Fixer.

Is it possible to roll back once CloudFix implements the fixer?

Yes, you can adjust your ASGs back to using gp2 directly and they will apply on your next refresh.

Does this fix require downtime?

No. ASG Volume Retyping via CloudFix does not require any downtime. It is executed as a zero downtime fix.
