(Preview) Right-size Elasticsearch Volumes

Opportunity Name: Right-size Elasticsearch Volumes

AWS Resource Type: Elasticsearch with EBS Volumes

Opportunity Description

Most Elasticsearch clusters use EBS volumes to store data (some use i3 instances with attached volatile storage). EBS volumes can be hard drives, gp2 (currently gp3 is not supported) or i2.  As with general EBS volumes, these can be expanded without downtime, but are typically overprovisioned. Unlike general EBS volumes, however, these volumes can be down-sized CloudFix would find such volumes and right-size them to eliminate any such unnecessary costs.

Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):

CloudFix can cut 30% of the storage costs, which would be equivalent to anywhere between 10% to 15% of Elasticsearch costs. This is based on observations where such volumes are usually overprovisioned by around 50% on average.

Can CloudFix implement the fix automatically once I accept the recommendation?

Yes. Once you accept the recommendation and schedule the fix, execution is automatic.

Is it possible to rollback once CloudFix implements the fixer?

The concept of rollback is not applicable to this optimization since once the volumes are optimized, there isn't a way to increase the costs of such volumes (i.e., going back to what they were before the optimization).

Does this fix require downtime?

No, there is no downtime because AWS OpenSearch (formerly Elasticsearch service) provides the ability to do blue-green modifications.
