Opportunity Description:

This opportunity identifies provisioned Amazon Aurora MySQL and Aurora PostgreSQL instances with low average utilization and sporadic usage patterns that could benefit from migrating to Aurora Serverless v2. Aurora Serverless v2 automatically scales compute capacity (in ACUs) in response to application workload changes, potentially leading to significant cost savings.

 

Criteria for identifying the opportunity:

• Analyze RDS instance usage metrics over the past 31 days (configurable) for sporadic usage patterns.
• Identify provisioned Aurora MySQL and Aurora PostgreSQL instances where converting to Aurora Serverless v2, with a recommended minimum and maximum ACU configuration, could reduce costs.
• Annual cost, extrapolated from the last 31 days of usage, exceeds the annual public cost threshold (default $100).
• Ensure instances are compatible with Aurora Serverless v2, considering database engine versions and features.

 

Potential savings (range in % on annual basis):

• A recommendation is only generated when projected savings from migrating to Aurora Serverless v2 exceed 30% of the current RDS cost; actual projected savings are calculated per instance from a simulated Serverless v2 ACU profile (optionally accounting for Database Savings Plan coverage).
• Actual savings will depend on the specific usage patterns and configurations of the identified RDS instances.
