OpenSearch GP2 to GP3 Volume Type Change

Opportunity Name:

OpenSearch GP2 to GP3 Volume Type Change

AWS Resource Type:

OpenSearch Domain

Opportunity Description:

This finder identifies OpenSearch domains using GP2 volumes for storage and recommends changing these volumes to GP3. GP3 volumes offer better performance and lower cost compared to GP2 volumes, making this change beneficial for cost optimization and potentially enhancing performance.

Criteria for identifying the opportunity:

  • OpenSearch domains utilizing GP2 volumes are targeted, with GP2 usage seen within the last 7 days.
  • Annualized amortized cost, extrapolated from the last 31 days of usage, exceeds the annual cost threshold (default $100).
  • Domains not tagged with 'cloudfix_dont_fix_it' to exclude them from processing.

Can CloudFix apply an automatic fix?

Yes. Once you accept the recommendation, CloudFix runs an SSM Automation runbook that updates the OpenSearch domain configuration to switch the EBS volume type from GP2 to GP3. You generate the runbook and execute it from the CloudFix dashboard; unattended (fully automatic) execution is not enabled for this fixer by default.

Other considerations:

  • Performance impact: Changing from GP2 to GP3 may result in different performance characteristics. Users should evaluate the impact based on their specific workload patterns.
  • Data loss considerations: The change from GP2 to GP3 does not inherently risk data loss, but as with any significant infrastructure change, a recent backup is advisable.
  • Security concerns: There are no direct security implications of changing volume types, but ensuring that encryption settings are consistent is recommended.
